Maharashtra UT-turn: Says only Belgaum merger works


A day after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the Belgaum border dispute, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil admitted that the government has changed its stand over the demand for Union Territory (UT) status for the disputed areas as it would dilute the demand for a merger of the region with Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena leader Diwakar Raote, who was part of the all-party delegation which met the PM on Wednesday, moved a point of objection in the Legislative Council on Thursday, stating that Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had misled the state by issuing two different statements on the Belgaum issue in the two Houses of the Legislature.
