Taxi strike in West Bengal

Kolkata: Isolated incidences of violence have been reported during the ongoing 24-hour taxi strike, which is on in the state in demand of an increase in taxi fares following a hike in fuel prices.

The Bengal Taxi Association, the largest taxi union in the state, has called the 24-hour strike which began on Wednesday midnight. The association has also threatened to pull all taxis off the streets if the government does not accept its demands by July 30.

Supporters of the strike attacked a taxi which was out on Ripon street. The driver was beaten up and the taxi was damaged. Police personnel came and brought the situation under control.

The injured taxi driver has been hospitalised.

There are very few taxis on the roads and commuters have been affected.
